Exciting engineering challenges with great prizes

Show off your skills and solve real design problems

Stratasys & KeyShot Packaging Design Competition

Stratasys continues to lead the way in how designers, engineers and innovators use 3D printing to solve complex challenges. In product development, time is money. That’s why Stratasys and KeyShot collaborated to create a streamlined workflow. Designers can now go from concept ideation and sketch to visualization and render to putting full, CMF detailed design models in stakeholders’ hands, faster than ever before.

Design the best SODA POP BOTTLE. We’ll provide the files for the bottles, you bring them to life! Showcase your design prowess and mastery of the PolyJet/KeyShot design-to-print workflow and you could win:
 A free 3d printed PolyJet model of your design
 A valuable voucher for printing services from Stratasys Direct Manufacturing
 A free KeyShot Pro V10 license
 Recognition and promotion in popular publications

For this challenge, we ask you to download one of the pop bottle files we created for you:

From there, use KeyShot 10.0 or 10.1 to create your soda pop bottle label
design. To win, you must meet all the requirements defined below, follow the technical guidelines and submit the files formats specified below.

**The Challenge prizing is for North America Only**

Requirements

  • TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

    1. The design should be of similar size and shape to one of the supplied starter files.
Aesthetic modifications including displacement and grips for the cap are encouraged.
    2. Materials Available: Full color rigid materials, Transparent, Flexible and combinations of them
    3. Files must be 3d printable – watertight 3d volumes, no open surfaces.
    4. Wall thickness and/or any added feature sizes shall not fall below 0.02” inch

  • Judging Criteria

    1. Design Attractiveness and Creativity: Is the design aesthetically pleasing and does
it evoke emotion? Is it creative? Will it inspire other designers to use PolyJet in their
design process? Does it grab my attention and make me want to buy this product?
Store shelves are a competitive arena. Your task is to make people want to reach
    for your product first.
    2. Utilization of PolyJet technology and KeyShot software: Use of multi-color, multi-
material, clear materials and texture capabilities. How does the design show the
value of PolyJet over other 3d printing technologies? What are the features /
    capabilities showcased in the design?
    3. Printability: Must adhere to the technical specifications to generate a printable
    model.

  • WHAT IS REQUIRED?

    c. What were the challenges you faced and what were your goals?
    d. Describe your experience with the KeyShot/GrabCAD workflow.
How did it help you with your design method? Ease of use?
    e. What printers do you have access to at your school?

    2. Professional Designer Division
Professional Designers must submit a 2-3 paragraph (500-750 words) narrative that
    includes all the following:
    a. Complete the registration form: https://forms.office.com/r/26hP5mdYkB
    b. Your title and job responsibilities
    c. Prior to this design competition, were you aware this capability existed?
    d. Do you think the design community is mostly, slightly or barely aware that
    this capability exists?
    e. Could this have been produced by any other 3d printing technologies that
    you are aware of?
    h. Tell us about your experience with KeyShot and this design to print
    workflow.
    p. What impact will this workflow have on the product design process for
    those who adopt it?
    i. What printers do you have access to at your company?
    j. What is the next printer your company is considering? How soon?

    3. Supporting images including, but not limited to, final design rendering or image
    4. Supporting documents on the design iteration & creative process (including
the previous 3D printed, hand-made mockup or sketches) to get to the final design
    5. KeyShot (.ksp) file
    6. 3MF Exported from KeyShot. Follow these best practices
Best Practices for Working in KeyShot & GrabCAD Print
    7. GrabCAD .print file containing your file

  • KEYSHOT AND 3D PRINT DESIGN BEST PRACTICES:

    File Set-up:
 Make sure the original model resolution (Tessellation) is suitable for 3D
printing. Models can appear “smooth” in KeyShot but have faceted surfaces
    when printed.
 If you are creating textures using displacement, be sure that the tolerance
between a textured part and it's nearest object is greater than the height of
the displaced texture. To correct geometry that is visibly overlapping, simply
scale down the part until the texture no longer visibly intersects.
 If you are using the same KeyShot file for both 3MF export and final image
rendering, you may want to create separate Model Sets to manage the
materials as some materials are better suited for 3D Print
o Specifically, avoid using Translucent or Scattering Medium materials
and instead use Plastic, Glass, Gem or Liquid Materials.
o For a full list of Materials to Prefer or Avoid reference the document
below, Designing in KeyShot for PolyJet 3D Printing.
 If you have not set your scene measurements inside of KeyShot you can do
    so using the export process.

    Exporting:
When you get to the 3MF Export dialog, here are the preferred settings:
 Use a DPI that is between 400 to 600.
o KeyShot applies DPI only to textures, labels and colors.
o If you do not have textures, labels, or colors, KeyShot ignores the DPI.
o As a rule, part resolution should be higher than the printer resolution.
Currently, the default resolution in KeyShot is 400 DPI.
o Under 300 DPI the model appearance will be poor.
 The Number of samples should remain 16.
 Select the Prefer Textures option.
 Clear the Use Calculated Depth check box.
o If this option is selected, it applies the color to transparent parts
according to the thickness of each polygon. It simulates transparency
thickness when the core is clear. Clearing this check box results in a
    faster file export.

The Challenge is open to everyone, BUT the some of the Prizing is only for North America. So if you win and you live outside of North America you wont be able to receive the 3D Printed Model and the Stratasys Direct Manufacturing voucher as they only deliver to USA and Canada.

So I can participate but I can't receive a prize should I win. Why are the latest challenges always American based when launched on an international platform?

I understand it correctly that original base model shapes cannot be modified? Just what displacement map of the texture allow.

Hamdi, Yes you can do that if you so choose. If you have someone who lives in NA to receive the NA prizes you can suggest to do so.

    Johan,
These challenges are set up by the challenge creator, if they want to hold a challenge that is only for NA they may do so. Even if we had a future challenge that is only EU they may do so as well. This challenge allows all to participate but some won't be able to receive certain prizes due to Shipping costs and Stratasys DIrect Manufacturing is only for NA at the moment.
